Who Inherits the Farm? A Real-Life Guide to Farm Succession (Part 2)

In Part 2 of this special two-part conversation, Tracy continues her interview with Nick Shady, co-author of Who Will Get the Farm?—a practical guide to farm succession planning.

While Part 1 focused on the book and Nick’s personal story, this episode dives deeper into the big challenges facing agriculture and family farms when it comes to transition planning.

Nick and Tracy explore:
  • Why farm succession is often one of the hardest—and most emotional—decisions farm families will ever face.
  • The biggest obstacles that prevent smooth transitions, from unspoken expectations to communication breakdowns.
  • How generational dynamics and lack of clarity can affect not only finances but also relationships and long-term legacies.
  • Why starting the conversation early is the single most important step to protecting both the family and the farm.
  • Packed with real-world lessons and insights, this episode highlights the practical steps and honest conversations that can help families avoid conflict and secure their farming legacy for future generations.

👉 Whether you’re actively planning or just beginning to think about the future, this is a must-listen for every farm family navigating succession.

About the Guest:

Nick Shady

I grew up on a farm in Skipton and was educated in Ballarat. I have been a resident of Ballarat full time since 2009; I am a semi-retired broad acre grain farmer and business owner. I live in the Central Ward and enjoy the amenities with my son.

I have gained a Master’s Degree in Business Administration (MBA) from Federation University, which has enabled me to volunteer in board roles on organisations such as Sports Central Ballarat, and the Beaufort Community Bank.

I am a community volunteer working to promote positive mental health; I have been involved with a project called “The Ripple Effect”, and have previously been a volunteer telephone counsellor.

I am also the co-author of Who Gets the Farm: a practical guide to farm succession planning.
