Farming doesn’t stop in the winter. These quieter months can be one of the most important times for farmers to make strategic financial decisions that support both their short-term needs and long-term success.
An Advance Payments Program (APP) cash advance from Canadian Canola Growers Association can play a valuable role in those plans.
“A cash advance puts money in farmers’ pockets for their inventory without having to sell that inventory,” says Dave Gallant, Vice-President, Finance & APP Operations at CCGA. “It gives them low-cost working capital to help run the farm in whatever way they need.”

Planning Ahead: How Cash Advances Support Farmers Heading into Spring 2026
All-year versatility
For immediate cash flow requirements, an advance can help cover the farm’s day-to-day operating needs. Many farmers also use advances in winter and early spring to take advantage of early-buy pricing on seed, fertilizer, fuel, and other inputs, reducing overall costs heading into the growing season.
Looking longer term, a cash advance supports stronger business planning. By increasing cash flow, farmers can hold grain or livestock for better market timing, potentially improving margins.
The interest savings difference
One key benefit is the interest savings available. For both the 2025 and 2026 program years, farmers have access to up to $500,000 interest-free. The maximum eligible advance is $1 million, and the remaining portion is offered at below-prime rates. Compared to traditional operating loans, that can translate into tens of thousands of dollars of savings over the year.
Designed for all farms and farmers
Offering low interest costs and improving a farmer’s ability to plan, cash advances work for farms of all sizes. An advance can be especially useful for young or transitioning farmers, because eligibility is based on owning the inventory (and not the land or equipment), and it can help new farmers establish a farm credit history.
Helping Farmers Succeed
Advances are available on more than 55 commodities, including grains, oilseeds, livestock, and honey. Apply for a 2025 advance now; 2026 applications will be available in February 2026.
