New Program Aims to Reduce the Stress of Farm Succession Planning

A new peer‑based program called Groundworks is launching today to help Canadian farmers navigate succession with greater confidence and less stress. Funded through AAFC’s Producer Wellbeing Initiative, Groundworks is a collaborative effort between the Canadian Centre for Agricultural Wellbeing, Ag Risk Managers Ltd., and Loft32/Farmers Bridge.

Research consistently shows that farmers experience high levels of stress, and succession planning remains one of the most significant contributors. “Succession is not just a business transaction; it is a human journey,” says Maggie Van Camp, farmer and founder of Loft32/Farmers Bridge. “And quite frankly, we are not doing a good enough job at this part of the planning.”

Groundworks responds to this need by combining:

• Peer group support, offering connection, shared experience, and accountability
• Confidential financial analysis, helping farmers understand their farm’s readiness for transition
• Online video training
• Workshops, designed to build skills and confidence for navigating intergenerational change

Together, these elements equip farmers with the knowledge and emotional support needed to manage what is often the most complex transition of their lives.
