FCC KNOWLEDGE PODCAST - TALKING FARM AND FOOD - Episode 14: Getting creative: Building a solid foundation on leased land

Dave Semmelink, a Vancouver Island farmer, is a busy guy. He raises livestock, grows vegetables, runs a farm stand and recently invested in an abattoir – and does it all on leased land. It may seem risky, but with a solid business plan, he’s set up for success.

In this episode, Marty and Dave Semmelink talk the pros of leasing, adding value to your operation, seizing opportunity and staying true to yourself through it all.

Dave Semmelink
Co-owner/operator Lentelus Farms

My name is Dave, and along with my dad, Willem, we own and operate Lentelus Farms. We are passionate about creating sustainable solutions for the agricultural industry. Along with my dad’s 35 years of organic agriculture background, I bring a conservation science and business management background to the business from my time. My mum is a brilliant cook and caregiver who has a contagious love of quality, fresh ingredients, and celebrating a good meal with family and friends, she has been the inspiration to us founding the farm.

After years of resisting my farming heritage and searching out other enviro-centric jobs, I acknowledged my growing desire to become part of a local community and contribute to BC's farming community. I now lease three farms from Ducks Unlimited in the Comox Valley. I manage a heritage cross-breeding program for my pigs, and raise pastured chickens for meat and eggs! We also run a small grazing and haying operation producing grass-fed and finished beef and lamb. We promote the sustainable consumption of meat, "eat less meat, but eat better meat" is a line you'll often hear from us. Our meat is of the highest quality, characterized by its delicious intramuscular marbling well not being overly fatty. Great meat, with a great conscience!
