UK - Beef Expo Sends Three Winning Young Show Stars To Canada
May 28, 2012
Three Hereford cattle enthusiasts won a trip of a lifetime to Toronto Canada at NBA Beef Expo 2012, held at the Three Counties Showground, Malvern, Worcestershire.
The trio was one of nine teams in the Young Show Stars challenge, who all competed for a marathon of nearly seven hours, collecting points by showing their skills at preparing, presenting and leading their cattle, stockjudging, and also promoting themselves and their breed via promotional material and an interview in the showring.
The winning team was put together by the Hereford Cattle Society and were Hannah Braithwaite (18) from Bewdley, Worcestershire, James Ludgate (19) from Thame, Oxfordshire, and Fiona Woollatt (20) from St Albans, Hertfordshire.
All three are passionate about the Hereford breed and very active on the show circuit. Hannah and Fiona are also coordinators for the Young Hereford Members movement, representing the West Midland Hereford Association and Midland and East Anglia Hereford Association respectively.
Following the National Beef Association competition, sponsored by the Three Counties Agricultural Society, the Hereford team will fly to Toronto, Canada, to compete in a similar competition at the Royal Winter Fair.
Second place in the Young Show Stars challenge, which was a new competition for this year's Beef Expo, went to the team from the South Wales and Mid West Limousin Club. They were Jess Maynard (14) from Exeter, Devon, Nia Griffiths (21) from Whitland, Carmarthenshire, and Lowri Davies (23) from Milford Haven, Pembrokeshire.
Paul Westaway, Beef Expo 2012 Chairman, said: "The NBA and Beef Expo Organising Committee were absolutely delighted to put this new competition on, and it was such a pleasure to see the young competitors being so enthusiastic and drawing such a crowd to the showring. They really are the stars of the future.
"We couldn't have done it without the vision and enthusiasm of individuals on the Organising Committee, or sponsorship from the Three Counties Agricultural Society and other companies – our thanks go to all of them."
The other competitors in the competitions were teams from the Aberdeen-Angus Youth Development Programme, the Wales and Borders British Blue Club, the North West Midlands and North Wales Limousin Club, the South West Aberdeen-Angus Club, Devon Cattle Breeders Society, a team supported by showman B.E. Williams, and a Canadian team from the National Junior Beef Heifer Show at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair.
