21,000 Chicks Die in Canada Barn Fire
January 10, 2012
SHAUGHNESSY, Alberta, Jan. 8 (UPI) -- Fire raced through a barn on a farm in Canada, killing 21,000 chicks, the farm's owners say.
The blaze occurred just after 9 a.m. Saturday at the farm owned by Martin and Colleen Vredegoor of Shaughnessy, north of Lethbridge in Alberta province, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported.
While there was no damage estimate, Colleen Vredegoor said the loss was significant, the news network said.
"It's an absolutely horrible feeling. You have no idea; your whole body just started to tremble looking out bedroom window and seeing barn," she said.
Fire officials said the blaze was not considered suspicious but was being investigated to determine its cause.
